Hebrews 11:1-16 – “Stepping Out”

God called Abraham out of his comfort zone, into a land beyond the desert. Abraham had no idea of what to expect, he had to trust God completely in his daily life.

Hebrews 11:8 (NIV)

8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.

Like Abraham we are called to a life of obedience, even in, perhaps especially in, those times when we cannot see where we are going to end up.

Like Abraham we are called to Trust God for the present.

———

Abraham went on living in tents, even though he had come from a city with every convenience, because he trusted that God would honour his promises, because he was actually looking toward eternity, to the new Jerusalem.

Hebrews 11:9-10 (NIV)

9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

We are called to life a life in the face of the future, not living for today but in the light of God’s promises.

Like Abraham we are called to trust God for the future.

———

We are told that Abraham died without receiving what he had been promised. It would not be until the time of Moses that his children fully inherited the land. However, the chapter closes by stating that the promise was not for this life.

Hebrews 11:39-40 (NIV)

39 These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.

All earthly blessings pale into insignificance in the light of our salvation through faith in Christ. If we walk obediently with God, we will indeed be blessed in this life, but the blessing will only fully be ours in the life to come.

Like Abraham we are called to trust God for our salvation.

———
